Like many buildings in Paris the Museum Orsay ( @museeorsay ) has a second life as it was was originally a railway station, called “Gare d’Orsay”. It was planned and finished in time for the 1900 Exposition Universelle but already in 1939 the build was to short for the trains that became longer and longer. After changing different purposes throughout the years in 1970 a permission to demolish the building was granted. Fortunately the then Minister for Cultural Affairs, ruled against the plans and the building was finally put on the list of Historic Monuments in 1978. Since 1986 it’s home to over 2000 Paintings and 600 sculptures. I haven’t been there for a while but it’s on my list again now. How about you to Orsay or not to Orsay ?
