While exploring Oman along the coast you will see these type of boats called “Dhow”. These are traditional wooden-hulled Arabian boats that have a peculiarity of being so-called stitched constructions: The planks, usually of teak, formerly were literally sewn together using coconut rope. Oman had a far-reaching commercial network due to it’s strategic localization. It takes ~5 days to sail to India and trading roads to and from Oman to Europe and China were known from 2000 B.C. Only the town Sur still has shipyards where you can see this almost vanished artisanal tradition now. When you drive by the coast at low tide you can see dozens of boats laying stranded in the shallows. Combined with the sealife and many birds that hunt the mudlands for food, it’s quite an astonishing view
