Besides being one of the rare Ottoman cities that has survived to the present day, Safranbolu is considered among the most important cities in the region of Anatolia, specifically due to its strategic location on the Silk Road. With it’s around 1200 cultural and historic features it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List 1994 as I wrote in my last post.  The city has held many names over the history, but it’s current name derives from the plant of ‘saffron’ (Safran in türkish) as it was a trading place with many plantations for growing saffron. In the picture you can see the Cinci Han which was a trading center and caravansary where Caravans traveling the Silk Road would stop to trade, replenish and rest before continuing their road.
